Flow and Texture: The Creative Journey of this Abstract Tattoo

Not every tattoo begins with a fully formed idea. For this piece, my preparation was minimal—I spent some time looking at patterns and was drawn to include something inspired by water. This was the guiding feeling I had, and from there, the design unfolded naturally.

The tattoo stretches across the back in an abstract, flowing composition. Bold black lines move like currents, meeting softer textures that mimic ripples or scales. These elements create depth and movement, giving the piece a dynamic, almost alive quality. At the edges, ink splashes and drips are complementing the more intricate areas.

This tattoo strikes a balance between structure and spontaneity. The bold lines give it direction, while the softer shading and textures keep the piece organic and free-flowing. It mirrors the qualities of water—strong, unpredictable, and always moving.

The design evolved as I worked. While I had a rough concept in mind, much of it was guided by intuition and the natural contours of the customer’s body as well as his already existing tattoo. Placing the flowing lines in harmony with their back was key to making the tattoo feel connected to them, rather than just sitting on their skin.

The tattoo is open to interpretation, but to me, it reflects movement and adaptability—like water finding its way through obstacles. It’s a celebration of resilience, change, and growth.

These tattoos are as much about the process as the finished piece. Each one grows out of the connection I have with the person I’m working with, blending intention with intuition.
